Project Info

Originally a two-story, 12-until complex surrounding an open courtyard on three sides, Sunnyside enlisted Mather & Daly Architects to reimagine the space.  This ambitious design added four new unites and enclosed the open courtyard, all while ensuring that current residents could remain in their homes throughout construction.

The four new units are spacious one-bedroom apartments with a den, featuring sun tubes in the ceiling to enhance natural light.  Although the building is two stories, both levels offer ground-floor access.  Due to the sloping of the site, a new elevator provides residents with easy access between levels, as well.

The most dramatic change was transforming the open courtyard into a stunning 3,000-square-foot atrium.  This new atrium highlights exposed heavy timber trusses and a tongue-and-groove wood ceiling, adding warmth and architectural character.  Clerestory windows and ceiling skylights flood the space with natural light, preserving the open-air ambiance in a climate-controlled environment.  Three indoor planters bring the outdoors inside, while a new café enhances the community experience.

To improve safety and reliability, a generator was added to ensure residents have continuous power. The building exterior received a new facelift, aligning its appearance with other newer buildings on Sunnyside’s campus.

Once considered the older, more modest section of Sunnyside’s independent living offerings, the newly renovated Woodside Atrium Apartments now stand as a beautiful, modern addition to the campus, blending enhanced amenities with thoughtful architectural design.
